Childhood Whimsy

Artist Statement

This piece was created to depict my inner child abstractly. I first drew the blue abstract feature in the bottom right corner. Though I recalled always being a plump child, one of my favorite memories of being younger was not being concerned with my body size or image and being more focused on what my body could do and create as opposed to what it looked like. I also recall being very interested in how the world worked and, more importantly, what new thing I could bring to the world (depicted by the pink and orange lattice structure and the multicolored smear at the top of the painting, respectively.) As I grew, I began to understand how comparisons and arbitrary measurements would be used to describe my work and worth. However, as a child, these metrics faded into the background (depicted by the green, red and gold blending into the yellow background in the bottom left corner.)
